Minimum Qualifications

  • Collegiate professional with endorsement in special education visual impairment.
  • Tuberculin Skin Test certifying that the individual is free of contagious tuberculosis.
  • Eligible for, or in possession of, appropriate Virginia teaching license.
  • Transcription of student materials as well as continuous walking, carrying, bending, sitting, standing, stooping, lifting, and driving.
  • Work involves risk, at times, from interaction with special needs students, which may include accompanying emotional or physical impairments requiring special techniques.
  • Must use universal precautions at avoiding contagious disease. ? Employee in this position must display a great deal of flexibility, creativity, and initiative. 

 

Nature of Position

  • Considerable knowledge of the implications of visual impairments asthey relate to the growth, development, and education of students with visual impairments.
  • Communicates effectively both orally and in written form.
  • Considerable knowledge of the rules and principles of literary and braille codes with the ability to instruct and transcribe materials in each code.
  • Knowledge of the function and use of assistive, accommodative devices for use by the students with visual impairments.
  • Exhibits a working knowledge of State and Federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Ability to accurately measure, observe, report, and record learning progress of students.
  • Ability to coordinate and implement an itinerant caseload serving students with visual impairments.
  • Knowledge of basic orientation and mobility techniques used with visually impaired persons.
  • Knowledge of functional low vision and low vision aids prescribed for use by students with visual impairments.
